Irish Folk Group RUNA at St. Kieran’s

Pushing the boundaries of Irish folk music, RUNA will be performing at St. Kieran Community Center for the Arts on Sunday, March 4 at 2 pm. Tickets, $15 for adults and $10 for those under 18, are available on line (www.stkieranarts.org) for a small additional fee, at the arts center office and at the door on the evening of the show.

“Best of all, RUNA sounds like no one else!” – Travis Rogers, Jr., Music Life & Times.

Quickly gaining recognition as one of Irish music’s new “super-groups,” RUNA has been enchanting audiences by pushing the boundaries of Irish folk music into the Americana and roots music formats since their formation in 2008. Interweaving the haunting melodies and exuberant tunes of Ireland and Scotland with the lush harmonies and intoxicating rhythms of jazz, bluegrass, flamenco and blues, they offer a thrilling and redefining take on traditional music.

The group has been honored internationally, winning Top Group and Top Traditional Group in the Irish Music Awards and four Independent Music Awards including Best Live Album, Best World/Traditional Song and Best Bluegrass Song.

RUNA consists of vocalist and step-dancer Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia, Dublin-born guitaris Fionán de Barra, Cheryl Prashker of Canada on percussion, Zach White of St. Louis on guitar, vocals and mandolin, and Maggie White of Kentucky on the fiddle and Mandolin.

RUNA recently released their fifth album, “RUNA: LIVE.” Receiving lavish praise on both sides of the Atlantic, the album has been hailed as “an incredible masterpiece” – Marcene Bronson, The Celtic Crier.

Seeking to preserve and continue a traditional culture in a modern age, RUNA creates the backbone of its signature roots sound from the musical and geographical diversity of its individually established band members. Their strive for excellence and creativity blazes a trail for the future of folk music, earning them the reputation as one of the most innovative Irish folk groups of this generation.

Ski, Shoe & Fatback to the Clouds

Now in our 22nd year, this challenging event takes place at Great Glen Trails and the snow-covered Mt. Washington Auto Road. Long referred to as “North America’s Toughest 10K,” the Ski, Shoe & Fatbike to the Clouds course has an average grade of 12% over the last 6K as you climb the final 2,200 vertical feet. While there will be competitors who are seeking to make or break a record, for others it is the ultimate way to personally test themselves in one of nature’s most spectacular environments.

After covering 4k on the Nordic system, racers will have the Mt. Washington Auto Road to themselves as remarkable views of the Presidential Range and beyond reveal themselves. On race day, there will be a mass start of cross country skiers at 10 am, followed by the snowshoe start at 10:05 am and Fatbikers at 10:10 am. Ski, Shoe & Fatbike to the Clouds is considered a true freestyle event, there will not be separate classes for classic and skate skiing. This is NOT an event for inexperienced fatbikers, skiers or snowshoers!
