Whitefield, Lancaster & Jefferson
Downtown Lancaster is a bustling place, with the air of a classic New England town, with its wide sidewalks, friendly shops and eateries. The town is a popular destination over the Labor Day weekend, when the Lancaster Fair signals the end of summer with its lively blend of fair activities. Catch a movie at the beautiful Rialto Theatre on Main Street; drive or hike the auto road to the Lodge and fieldstone Fire Tower at Week’s State Park, just south of town, for panoramic views; or drive “Out East” along North Road through lovely farmland with the Kilkenny Range as a backdrop. Whitefield’s centerpiece is its lovely bandstand on the Common in King’s Square, also home to the town’s information booth in the summer. Summertime on the Common means Monday evening band concerts, antique car drive-ins and Sunday morning pancake breakfasts. The Common is flooded in winter to provide a skating rink. Whitefield is home to the Mountain View Grand Resort, one of New Hampshire’s famous Grand Hotels. The Weathervane Theatre offers a rotating repertory of shows each summer, continuing a summer theatre tradition begun in 1934. At over 5,000 acres, the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge provides innumerable birdwatching opportunities. For more information visit www.northerngatewaychamber.org.
Jefferson boasts panoramic views of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, miles of hiking, biking and snowmobile trails, dog sledding adventures, and the oldest 18-hole golf course in the state. Birders travel from all over the world to the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge, a noted bird sanctuary, and kids will delight in meeting Santa Claus at the award-winning Santa’s Village family amusement park.
