Weathervane Theatre — Opening Night for Driving Miss Daisy

The deep south of the late 1940s has some commonality with today. For example, having demolished yet another car, the aging Daisy Werthan is informed by her son that she will no longer be driving. Instead, the rich, sharp-tongued Jewish widow of 72 must henceforth rely on the services of a chauffeur, and the person he hires for the job is a thoughtful, unemployed black man, Hoke. Neither is particularly impressed with the other. Miss Daisy immediately regards Hoke with disdain, while he balks at her patronizing tone and what he believes is her latent prejudice.

The story spans 25 years as the two, despite their mutual differences, grow ever closer and more dependent on each other. They become almost a couple as both come to realize they have more in common than they ever believed possible — and that times and circumstances would ever allow them to publicly admit.
