Weeks State Park Presents: Revealing the Long Hidden Black Heritage in NH

Slavery & the Underground Railroad in New Hampshire is the newest addition by author Michelle Arnosky Sherburne, where she reveals incredible facts and stories of Amos Fortune, Harriet Wilson, and slavery in New Hampshire. New Hampshire was once a hotbed of abolitionist activity, but the state had its struggles with slavery, with Portsmouth serving as a slave-trade hub for New England. Creating a statewide antislavery movement, abolitionists, along with freed slaves, assisted in transporting escapees to freedom via the Underground Railroad. Includes stories of President George Washington’s runaway slave, and of Dartmouth College (founded to educate Native Americans, but built and maintained by slave labor).

Weeks State Park summer programs are held on Thursdays at 7pm in the Summit Lodge’s Great Room. Attendance is free and the public is invited to all programs. Call for confirmation of dates and topics.

Weeks State Park Presents: Dragons and Damsels of New Hampshire

Dragons and Damsels of New Hampshire, with Pamela Hunt of NH Audubon

People may be familiar with the dragonflies buzzing over their yard in the summer, or the damselflies that land on their kayak, but what do they really know about these ancient insects? This program provides an overview of the biology and ecology of the insect order Odonata, from their amazing life cycle (content alert: some pretty crazy reproductive behavior is involved!) to their incredible diversity. It also highlights a few of NH’s notable species and their stories, and closes with some results from the NH Dragonfly Survey, a five year volunteer-based project that documented the distribution of these insects across the state.

All programs held on Thursdays at 7 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) in the Summit Lodge’s Great Room. Attendance is free and the public is invited to all programs. Call (603) 788-4004 for confirmation of dates and topics.

Weeks State Park Presents: Fern Natural History Walk

Join in for an easy walk to identify and learn all about the ferns of Mount Prospect, including some unusual ferns associated with calcium rich environments. Author of the Peterson Field Guide to Ferns, Elizabeth Farnsworth is sometimes changed to “Fernsworth” for her expertise in ferns. While this field trip is labeled as a fern walk, the group will be looking at all kinds of natural history topics, from ants to wildlife. Meet at the Summit Parking Lot.

Weeks State Park Presents: Trouble in the Presidentials

Trouble in the Presidentials: What a Mountaineering Accident Can Teach Us About Decision Making and Managing Risk

Although strikingly beautiful, Mount Washington and the surrounding Presidential Range hold the dubious distinction of having “the world’s worst weather.” The Presidential Range is also world-renowned for the challenging terrain it provides for alpinists, and as such has been the scene of hundreds of mountaineering accidents over the years. Certified Wilderness First Responder Ty Gagne will provide an in-depth analysis of a recent tragedy on the range and extend those lessons and others learned above tree-line into people’s roles as outdoor enthusiasts, and in their day-to-day lives.

All programs held on Thursdays at 7 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) in the Summit Lodge’s Great Room. Attendance is free and the public is invited to all programs. Call (603) 788-4004 for confirmation of dates and topics.

Weeks State Park Presents: ConCorki

ConnCorki: A Homemade Catamaran of Wine Corks Sails the Length of the Connecticut River

Come join Pan van der Laan and Bob Fink, two intrepid sailors, as they navigate their unique craft along the Connecticut River from Pittsburg to the sea. Named ConnCorki after the river they hoped to navigate, the corks that float it, and an homage to Kon-Tiki, the balsa wood raft of Norwegian adventurer Thor Hyerdahl, used to cross the Pacific in 1947. Bob Fink helped Pan Van der Laan build the catamaran. Most of the 65,000 corks came from a wine tasting room at Cheers in Boston, but retired doctor Van der Laan said some patients contributed and helped, too.

All programs are held on Thursdays at 7 p.m. (unless otherwise noted) in the Summit Lodge’s Great Room. Attendance is free and the public is invited to all programs. Call (603) 788-4004 for confirmation of dates and topics.
