The Medallion Presents: The Sultans of String

Tag-Your-Own Christmas Tree

The spectacular colors of fall foliage, Christmas trees, and early holiday shopping: these are a few of our favorite things at The Rocks, and we’ll celebrate all of them each weekend from Sept. 29 through Oct. 20 during our tag-your-own Christmas tree season.

As the hills come alive with the crisp air and bright colors of fall, The Rocks welcomes visitors to meander through the fields in search of a perfect Christmas tree. Early tree-seekers may “tag” a tree and return once the farm opens for the Christmas season, from Nov. 17 through Dec. 24, to cut and purchase the tagged tree. When tagging trees, the more personal flair, the better – ribbons, bows, and baubles are welcome. Once again we will be having a contest of decorated trees in the field. The tag your own tree that has the best decorations and is posted on our Facebook page will be given to the family for free. “We started offering a tag-your-own tree season several years ago, and it’s become a favorite time to visit for many people,” said Nigel Manley, longtime manager of The Rocks. “We encourage tag-your-own customers to really dress up and personalize the tree they select so they can find it easily when they return later in the year to bring it home.

The Marketplace is chockful of USA-made items, including many from local and regional vendors, like beautifully handcrafted bells from New England Bells and Puzzles from White Mountain Puzzles Inc. There is a nice selection of locally made Jelly, Jams, and Honey all made in NH. Whether you’re shopping for grandma or the kids, you’re sure to find the perfect gift here. The Gift Shop at The Rocks is filled with ornaments, holiday decorations, and The Rocks’ own maple syrup. Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 6-8.

The New Hampshire Maple Museum, located in one of The Rocks Estate’s carefully restored historic buildings, will be open for self-guided tours daily during the fall through Oct. 20. The Rocks also boasts a network of pet-friendly walking trails, open daily, year-round, from dawn until dusk. And The Rocks Mobile Tour, with more than a dozen signs throughout the property displaying QR codes, allows visitors to use their smart phones to learn more about the history of the Estate, modern day conservation and management practices, and the different types of Christmas trees grown on the farm.

The Rocks is the North Country Conservation and Education Center of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (www.forestsociety.org), a non-profit membership organization founded in 1901 to protect the state’s most important landscapes and promote wise use of its natural resources. The landmark 1,400-acre Rocks includes numerous buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers Agri- and Eco-tourism opportunities throughout the year. Granite Grind Presents: Dana & Susan Robinson

From Cabot, Vermont – Americana-roots and folk duo, Dana and Susan Robinson combine vivid, songwriting and storytelling, with fiddle tunes, banjo grooves, elegant melodies, and rich harmony singing.

Drawing upon experiences of more than 20 years of touring, Dana and Susan craft a performance that conveys the mystery and wonders of their journey. Their unique blend of original songwriting and traditional Appalachian music, bring to their performances a deep understanding of America’s musical heritage.

Their compositions have been featured in Ken Burns’s “The National Parks, America’s Best Idea” and “The Dust Bowl.”

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Dana relocated to New England where he discovered both a thriving songwriters scene and the deep well of traditional mountain music. In the early 1980s, Dana settled in northern Vermont and built a house “off the grid” on 30 acres near the Canadian border. There he founded a popular bakery, café and music venue. Dana launched into full-time touring after the release of his 1994 debut CD, Elemental Lullabye, and after receiving a request to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City for Putumayo’s Shelter benefit project.

Susan grew up with her dad’s jazz big band rehearsing in the basement in Manchester, Vermont and learned classical piano as a child. As an adult she turned to oboe and Scottish fiddle. After Susan and Dana met in 2002, she took up old-time banjo and learned from the banjo-greats in and around Asheville, North Carolina. Since 2003 Dana and Susan have performed hundreds of concerts across the United States, Great Britain and Canada.

RiverFire

Just as the nights are getting colder in New England, the City of Berlin will be warming things up with one of the best fall festivals around—RiverFire! Come to “the city that trees built” to catch a full day of fun, ending with some dramatic fires on the river.

RiverFire burns bigger and brighter every year, and this year there are some fun new activities for everyone. The gates of the Service Credit Union Heritage Park, 942 Main Street, Berlin, NH will open to activities and vendors for visitors of ALL ages. Admission to the park is FREE.

Lighting of the Fires on the River At dusk, the Androscoggin River will be lit up with fires that appear to be floating on the water! The blazes will actually burn on the historic boom piers that dot the river. These piers were used during the height of the logging era, when they separated and guided the many trees that were sent down the river to the mills of Berlin. For RiverFire, these old piers will be stacked with skids, which when set aflame create a dynamic contrast of light over the dark waters. Take a walk along the bridge and admire the wonderful glowing carved pumpkins on the bridge.

RiverFire is the hottest event of the season. It is a spectacle you won’t want to miss!

5th Annual Zombie ATV Poker Run at Riverfire

The Colonial Presents: Greg Brown

“A wickedly sharp observer of the human condition.” —Rolling Stone

Greg Brown was born in the Hacklebarney section of southeastern Iowa and raised by a family that made words and music a way of life. His seasoned songwriting, storytelling, and music are deeply rooted in that place. He moves audiences with warmth, humor, a thundering voice and his unpretentious musical vision. His mother played electric guitar, his grandfather was a banjo player and his father was a holy roller preacher. Brown’s songwriting has been lauded by many, and his songs have been covered by Willie Nelson, Carlos Santana, Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter and more. At the personal request of Jeff Bridges, Brown also contributed songs for Bridges’ Oscar-Winning role in the film Crazy Heart. Ultimately, Brown is a storyteller who moves his audiences with his warmth, humor and deeply human musical vision.

Grand Opening at MOMS North Country Powersports

MOMS, the Northeast’s powersports leader, invites riders and outdoors enthusiasts to the grand opening of the all-new MOMS North Country Powersports in Groveton on Oct. 12-14. Grand opening activities and specials will be featured throughout the weekend, and a ribbon cutting and special flag raising ceremony featuring N.H. Gov. Chris Sununu will take place at noon on Saturday, Oct. 13.

MOMS in 2017 acquired the Groveton property formerly occupied by Emerson Outdoor Outfitters, and has spent a year transforming the spacious building and spacious surrounding grounds into the premier destination for off-road riders, snowmobilers, and motorcyclists touring throughout the Northeast

MOMS North Country Powersports is a Polaris off-road vehicles and snowmobile dealer, carries STIHL chainsaws and outdoor power tools, and features the North Country’s largest selection of firearms, ammunitions, and accessories in the Gun Room at Groveton. Grand Opening Activities Oct. 13

MOMS North Country Powersports will host powersports aftermarket vendors and offer service and product specials throughout the Oct. 12-14 grand opening. There will also be prize drawings, food available, and activities for youngsters all weekend.

Special activities scheduled for noon on Saturday, Oct. 13, include a N.H. State Police color guard delivering a 20’x38’ American flag that the governor and special military veteran guests will raise to 80 feet in height on the site’s new flagpole. Flags of Canada and New Hampshire will be raised on adjacent flagpoles.

Fireworks will accompany the flag’s arrival, and talented vocalist Summer Boutin will sing the U.S. national anthem. Local, county, and state dignitaries will be special guests taking part in the ribbon cutting and official opening of the new store.

New Facility Details and Plans

The MOMS North Country Powersports building has undergone extensive renovation and expansion in the past year. The result is a massive retail show floor, increased service space with numerous work stations for factory certified technicians, the expansive Gun Room at Groveton, and community spaces where local groups can hold meetings and events.

The two-story facility currently has 40,000 sq. ft. of space, and plans are in place to double that to accommodate new services such as vehicle storage.

Mom’s will offer year-round concierge vehicle storage so riders can leave their vehicles there and travel to and from their homes without trailering. Mom’s will have their vehicles cleaned, prepped, and ready to ride whenever they return to enjoy the region’s tremendous trail network.

The expanded vehicle service operation, under the management of lifelong Groveton resident Pat Wheelock, will focus on getting riders back on the trails or the road as quickly and efficiently as possible to optimize their recreational time in the North Country. And the property’s large parking lot will be available for area organizations to hold pre-ride meet-ups, fundraisers, and other activities.

AMC Pinkham Notch Presents: US Cycling Adventure

Featured speaker Charles Donna will regale us with the tale of his amazing 3,600 mile cycling adventure that covered 9 states and Ontario and involved more than 98,000 feet of elevation gain. The presentation will include lots of photos, training for the big adventure, inspiring music, stories, and equipment used, with a general emphasis of what’s involved in taking on a long distance cycling challenge.
