Bicknell’s Thrush is an extremely rare species with very limited breeding grounds. It is the rarest and most secretive of the breeding thrushes in North America and it is the only bird whose breeding is restricted to the Northeastern part of the continent. They usually breed at higher elevations, normally nesting above 3,000 ft. The unique and harsh climate is just what the birds prefer due to the combination of low vegetation and abundant moisture. The Mt. Washington Auto Road offers you a rare opportunity to view these obscure birds.
Our Bicknell’s Thrush Guided Tours leave early in the morning before the Mt. Washington Auto Road opens to the general public to insure there is as little additional noise or disturbance as possible. Our success rate at hearing and seeing this elusive thrush is quite good, but with the species in decline due to wintering habitat losses, there can be no guarantee of sightings.
Tours depart from the base of the Auto Road at 6:00am and last approximately 2 hours.

Alton Weagle had a passion for Mt. Washington. To show his passion, he climbed the Mt. Washington Auto Road in a number of unique ways: by car, on foot, walking backwards, blindfolded and finally pushing a wheelbarrow full of sugar…just to name a few. This day honors his spirit and the spirit of all the camels, Segways and even the odd pogo sticks that have been the first up the mountain – think you’re up to it?

She’s performed straight jazz, blues, synth pop, new wave rock, pop covers, trip-hop, gospel, ambitious singer-songwriter music, and more, putting her unique spin on each style. Each new round of music-making activity by Rickie Lee Jones is different. Her live concerts have almost without exception been unforgettable experiences over her more than 30 years of performing. Her artistry is brilliantly underlined with her latest album KICKS which spans two decades (50s–70s) of pop, rock and jazz, presenting her unique and sophisticated interpretations of songs that were pivotal to her musical journey.

THE ANNUAL MAPLE DINNER HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS.
The Rocks will once again celebrate the transition from a long winter to a welcome spring with its annual Maple Dinner on March 27 at 5:30 p.m. This year’s dinner will be held at Chef Joe’s in Franconia following the loss to fire of the program center at The Rocks. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit The Rocks. Programs at The Rocks offer opportunities to learn about maple sugaring, growing Christmas trees and sustainably managing forests and wildlife habitat. Take in the great views of New Hampshire’s mighty Presidential range on the way to our sugarhouse located on 2021 Presidential Highway (Route 2) in Jefferson, NH. Once you’re here, head out on a walking tour of the woods and see how we collect the sap from the maple trees. (Please dress accordingly for the weather and muddy conditions). Inside the sugarhouse, see how we convert the sap into our pure maple syrup. If weather permits, we will be boiling the sap. We’ll be serving sugar-on-snow and samples of our 2020 crop and our products will be available for purchase.
