St. Kieran Art Center Presents: Ethan Setiawan Band

Ethan Setiawan is a Boston-based mandolin player who’s won such accolades as the National Mandolin Championship, the RockyGrass Mandolin Championship, and a full-ride scholarship to Berklee College of Music. His path has wended its way through traditional bluegrass to Bach partitas to free jazz, and his debut full-length album is made up of original tunes drawing from all these wells.

Along with Ethan Setiawan, band members include Noah Harrington, Sam Leslie, and Julian Pinelli. United by their roots in bluegrass, they draw on myriad influences to produce Appalachian melodies tempered with chromaticism and groove. The quartet combines the sweeping lines of Julian Pinelli’s violin with the snap and groove of mandolinist Ethan Setiawan. Sam Leslie adds imitable guitar, all supported by Noah Harrington on bass. These four talented musicians met in Boston’s thriving roots music scene. The quartet’s hope is to create music with an electric edge to its acousticality.

Silly Spooky Halloween Extravaganza at Santa’s Village

This season brings our 9th annual Silly, Spooky Halloween Extravaganza.

The 2018 dates are: Saturday, October 20 and Saturday, October 27. The park is open on those two dates from 11am to 5pm.

Santa is usually here at this time, to see all of the children in costume, and those thinking ahead to Christmas.

The entire park is transformed into a magical Halloween adventure. Bring your children to celebrate this holiday in a fun and friendly atmosphere. There are “spooky” areas for the older children; some “fun” areas for the younger goblins. It’s a treat not to be missed. Shops cater to the Trick or Treaters, and it’s much more fun if you arrive in costume. Even many of the Silly Helpers are dressed for the occasion. Rides and food shops will be open too. It’s silly. It’s spooky. It’s Halloween at Santa’s Village.

Admission for the entire day is $28 per person; as always children ages 3 and younger are free. This includes all the rides and festivities for the day. Last ticket will be sold 2 hours before closing. Sorry, “Return Passes” are not offered during this event.

Tag-Your-Own Christmas Tree

The spectacular colors of fall foliage, Christmas trees, and early holiday shopping: these are a few of our favorite things at The Rocks, and we’ll celebrate all of them each weekend from Sept. 29 through Oct. 20 during our tag-your-own Christmas tree season.

As the hills come alive with the crisp air and bright colors of fall, The Rocks welcomes visitors to meander through the fields in search of a perfect Christmas tree. Early tree-seekers may “tag” a tree and return once the farm opens for the Christmas season, from Nov. 17 through Dec. 24, to cut and purchase the tagged tree. When tagging trees, the more personal flair, the better – ribbons, bows, and baubles are welcome. Once again we will be having a contest of decorated trees in the field. The tag your own tree that has the best decorations and is posted on our Facebook page will be given to the family for free. “We started offering a tag-your-own tree season several years ago, and it’s become a favorite time to visit for many people,” said Nigel Manley, longtime manager of The Rocks. “We encourage tag-your-own customers to really dress up and personalize the tree they select so they can find it easily when they return later in the year to bring it home.

There are lots of other things to do this time of year, too – walk along our trails and visit the interactive Maple Museum.” The Rocks will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. during tag-your-own weekends, and both shops will be open for shoppers looking to get an early jump on their holiday shopping. “This is a wonderful time of year to shop at The Rocks,” said retail manager Carleen Quinn. “Both the Rocks Marketplace and the Gift Shop are fully stocked, and there’s plenty of time for browsing without that last-minute frenzy of the holidays.”

The Marketplace is chockful of USA-made items, including many from local and regional vendors, like beautifully handcrafted bells from New England Bells and Puzzles from White Mountain Puzzles Inc. There is a nice selection of locally made Jelly, Jams, and Honey all made in NH. Whether you’re shopping for grandma or the kids, you’re sure to find the perfect gift here. The Gift Shop at The Rocks is filled with ornaments, holiday decorations, and The Rocks’ own maple syrup. Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 6-8.

The New Hampshire Maple Museum, located in one of The Rocks Estate’s carefully restored historic buildings, will be open for self-guided tours daily during the fall through Oct. 20. The Rocks also boasts a network of pet-friendly walking trails, open daily, year-round, from dawn until dusk. And The Rocks Mobile Tour, with more than a dozen signs throughout the property displaying QR codes, allows visitors to use their smart phones to learn more about the history of the Estate, modern day conservation and management practices, and the different types of Christmas trees grown on the farm.

The Rocks is the North Country Conservation and Education Center of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (www.forestsociety.org), a non-profit membership organization founded in 1901 to protect the state’s most important landscapes and promote wise use of its natural resources. Granite Grind Presents: Dana & Susan Robinson

From Cabot, Vermont – Americana-roots and folk duo, Dana and Susan Robinson combine vivid, songwriting and storytelling, with fiddle tunes, banjo grooves, elegant melodies, and rich harmony singing.

Drawing upon experiences of more than 20 years of touring, Dana and Susan craft a performance that conveys the mystery and wonders of their journey. Their unique blend of original songwriting and traditional Appalachian music, bring to their performances a deep understanding of America’s musical heritage.

Their compositions have been featured in Ken Burns’s “The National Parks, America’s Best Idea” and “The Dust Bowl.”

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Dana relocated to New England where he discovered both a thriving songwriters scene and the deep well of traditional mountain music. In the early 1980s, Dana settled in northern Vermont and built a house “off the grid” on 30 acres near the Canadian border. There he founded a popular bakery, café and music venue. Dana launched into full-time touring after the release of his 1994 debut CD, Elemental Lullabye, and after receiving a request to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City for Putumayo’s Shelter benefit project.

Susan grew up with her dad’s jazz big band rehearsing in the basement in Manchester, Vermont and learned classical piano as a child. As an adult she turned to oboe and Scottish fiddle. After Susan and Dana met in 2002, she took up old-time banjo and learned from the banjo-greats in and around Asheville, North Carolina. Since 2003 Dana and Susan have performed hundreds of concerts across the United States, Great Britain and Canada.

RiverFire

Just as the nights are getting colder in New England, the City of Berlin will be warming things up with one of the best fall festivals around—RiverFire! Come to “the city that trees built” to catch a full day of fun, ending with some dramatic fires on the river.

RiverFire burns bigger and brighter every year, and this year there are some fun new activities for everyone. The gates of the Service Credit Union Heritage Park, 942 Main Street, Berlin, NH will open to activities and vendors for visitors of ALL ages. Admission to the park is FREE.

RiverFire features fun, family-oriented activities such as:

  • Hay rides
  • Hot air balloon rides
  • The “Not So Scary” Halloween Party
  • A costume parade
  • Live Music

  • Lighting of the Fires on the River                                                                                    At dusk, the Androscoggin River will be lit up with fires that appear to be floating on the water! The blazes will actually burn on the historic boom piers that dot the river. These piers were used during the height of the logging era, when they separated and guided the many trees that were sent down the river to the mills of Berlin. For RiverFire, these old piers will be stacked with skids, which when set aflame create a dynamic contrast of light over the dark waters. Take a walk along the bridge and admire the wonderful glowing carved pumpkins on the bridge.

RiverFire is the hottest event of the season.  It is a spectacle you won’t want to miss!
