Northeast Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race

This historic all-uphill run draws thousands of runners from across New England, throughout the U.S., and from countries as close as Canada and as far away as Kenya, to make the grueling climb to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast. As the race begins its second half-century, this challenging annual event is now officially an in-house operation of the Mt. Washington Auto Road, the private organization that owns the ultra-steep 7.6-mile Auto Road where the race is held. The organization maintains overall ownership and supervision of the event.

Motorcycles ONLY!! Arrive before 10am and your motorcycle passenger rides for free! A ride up Mt. Washington is a one of-a-kind experience. Every time. Encounter ever changing weather, panoramic views and four climate zones as you climb the highest point in the Northeast.

Weather permitting. Motorcycle & Operator $17; Adult passenger $9; Child passenger (5-12 years) $7.

Guided Van Tours Available, but Road CLOSED to Drive Yourself passenger cars.

Alton Weagle Day

Alton Weagle Day is a celebration of first ascents on the Mt. Washington Auto Road.

Alton Weagle had a passion for Mt. Washington. To show his passion, he climbed the Mt. Washington Auto Road in a number of unique ways: by car, on foot, walking backwards, blindfolded and finally pushing a wheelbarrow full of sugar…just to name a few. This day honors his spirit and the spirit of all the camels, Segways and even the odd pogo sticks that have been the first up the mountain — think you’re up to it?

We invite you to dream up a “first ascent” of some kind and run the idea by us – you just may get invited to celebrate with us!

Subaru Mt. Washington Hill Climb: July 7-9, 2017

Three days, 75 cars, some of the best race and rally drivers from around the world, competing for “King of the Hill” honors on the Northeast’s tallest peak-Mt. Washington!

Known as one of the oldest motor sports events in the United States, the Climb to the Clouds was first run in 1904 and is now returning on July 7-9, 2017!

Seek the Peak Expo: July 22, 2017

The Mt. Washington Auto Road hosts the Seek the Peak after-party and expo at the base starting at 2pm. Seek the Peak is the largest annual fundraiser for the non-profit Mount Washington Observatory.

Enjoy vendor booths, live music, a cash bar and the famous all-you-can-eat feast by New Hampshire’s Hart’s Turkey Farm. All Seek the Peak hikers, friends, families and members of the general public are invited to attend.

Seek the Peak participants who meet the $200 fundraising minimum automatically receive free admission! All others may purchase a ticket to join in.

Sunrise Drives: Sundays – July 30th & August 27th

The Mt. Washington Auto Road opens early on three Sundays every summer, allowing guests to drive themselves to the summit of Mount Washington to view the sunrise from the highest peak in the Northeast.

Due to the popularity of these sunrise opportunities, we recommend not waiting until the last minute to arrive as you may spend time waiting at the Toll House due to traffic.

The State Park building on the summit will be open with limited food service on all three of these mornings.

Adaptive Sports Partners Sunrise Ascent:
August 6, 2017

The Auto Road will be CLOSED to public vehicles until 11:00am in support of this wonderful event, however Guided Tours will be available from 8:30 am.

This unique event is a fundraiser for the Adaptive Sports Partners of the North Country. At sunrise, teams will ascend the Mount Washington Auto Road, determined to reach the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington. Each team will include an adaptive athlete and a team of “mules” who will help the athlete up the 8 miles to the summit.

The Auto Road will OPEN to the public for normal driving operations around 1:30pm.

Muster in the Mountains: September 8 & 9, 2017

A weekend of colonial reenactment comes to the Auto Road

This two day event features a colonial encampment of reenactors representing the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and Mountain Man periods from 1750 through 1840. This gathering will take place in the fields at the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road in beautiful Pinkham Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Participants will demonstrate the use of appropriate tools, clothing, and firearms from their respective time periods. This event is free and open to the general public with the hope that the education they receive here may spur them on to consider becoming a future participant.

Open to the public: Friday and Saturday from 10am – 4pm
Please, no dogs.

The Auto Road remains fully open during this event.

Activities will include:

  • Woods walk competition
  • Tomahawk and knife throwing

The Mt. Washington Auto Road has Been Thrilling Visitors for more Than 150 Years!

For a one-of-a-kind experience drive yourself or take a guided tour up the Mt. Washington Auto Road to the summit of Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast. Be sure to pack your camera or iPhone because you’ll want to snap lots of photos along the way of the breathtaking vistas.

First opened in 1861, when horse-drawn wagons ferried visitors to the summit, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is America’s oldest man-made tourist attraction. Today, the mostly paved eight-mile-long Auto Road is traveled by motorists, motorcyclists, bicyclists and hikers eager to experience the amazing history, unpredictable weather, panoramic views and the opportunity to pass through four distinct climate zones.

Although days of sunny skies and jaw-dropping vistas elicit plenty of oohs and aahs, cloudy days show off the extreme weather that Mount Washington is so well known for. You can drive yourself to the summit, hop aboard an Auto Road van for a guided tour, or hike to the top of the 6,288-foot mountain.

The Auto Road offers two- and three-hour guided tours in comfortable vans with experienced drivers who regale passengers with the history and lore of the mountain.

The two-hour tour includes an hour on the summit, with time to explore the historic summit buildings and complimentary access to the Mount Washington Observatory’s interactive Extreme Mt. Washington Museum.

The three-hour guided tours provide visitors with the opportunity to explore the Auto Road anywhere from the base at Great Glen Trails to the summit of Mount Washington, with extra time for exploring scenic areas along the road and the option to spend more time on the summit.

Guests who choose to drive their own vehicles can spend the entire day exploring the pull-offs, short hikes, alpine flowers and vistas, but on a trip with one of the knowledgeable guides leading the way, will learn so much more and discover some of the hidden gems along the Auto Road.

Once you’ve conquered the summit, consider extending your stay and taking a guided tour of the paddling variety, which is available at Great Glen Trails located at the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road. Enjoy a guided kayak trip along the scenic lakes and rivers of northern New Hampshire, away from the crowds and with brilliant mountain views and opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Or rent a bike at Great Glen Trails and peddle along well-marked carriage trails through beautiful meadows and along scenic rivers, with exciting mountain views at every turn. ggt-mountainbike-03

The Mt. Washington Auto Road is open daily until late October for drive yourself touring. Two-hour guided tours are available daily through late October, while three-hour tours are available from June 7-September 3. All tours are weather permitting.

Mt. Washington Auto Road Opens to Treeline

The Mt. Washington Auto Road will begin its 156th season on Saturday, April 29 for guests to drive their own vehicles to treeline at 4,200 feet.

Operating hours will be 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., weather permitting. The 4.5 mile drive to treeline provides stunning vistas of the northern Presidentials and Great Gulf Wilderness offering a true taste of the Mount Washington experience!

A reduced rate of just $29 per vehicle to Drive Yourself includes: the famous bumper sticker and an audio tour on CD.
