Wooden Ships – The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Norman Coulombe, Don Coulombe, John Cucci and Tim Dion will present a performance featuring the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) were a folk rock super group made up of American singer-songwriters David Crosby and Stephen Stills and English American singer-songwriter Graham Nash. They became Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) when joined by Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, who was an occasional fourth member.

They were noted for their intricate vocal harmonies, often tumultuous interpersonal relationships, political activism and lasting influence on US music and culture.

Ken & Brad Kolodner with Alex Lacquement — Music At The Medallion

The dynamic father-son team of Ken and Brad Kolodner weave together a captivating soundscape on hammered dulcimer, banjo and fiddle, pushing the boundaries of the old-time tradition into uncharted territory.

Regarded as one of the most influential hammered dulcimer players in North America, Baltimore’s Ken Kolodner has joined forces with his son Brad Kolodner, a rising star in the claw-hammer banjo world. Together, they infuse their own brand of driving, innovative, tasteful and unique interpretations of traditional and original fiddle tunes and songs.

Rounding out the trio is multi-instrumentalist Alex Lacquement. Together, they perform tight musical arrangements of original and traditional old-time music with a “creative curiosity that lets all listeners know that a passion for traditional music yet thrives in every generation.”

Celtic Folk Group “Cantrip” at Medallion Opera House

Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a “charm, magic spell or piece of mischief” and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in the group’s musical arrangements and the compelling potency of their musicianship.

Originally formed as a quartet, Cantrip sprung from a local session in Edinburgh 15 years ago. Their driving music immediately caught the attention of the masses, and they were quickly signed to the Foot Stompin’ label. With their first album “Silver” (2001) in hand, Cantrip made its way across the water to the US, where they were received with roars and shouts (of enjoyment). After years of touring, Cantrip began producing albums on their own. Two albums later (“Boneshaker” 2005 & “Piping the Fish” 2008), Cantrip had cemented itself as a perennial band. Cantrip then redefined its sound.

Now a trio, the band tightened its arrangements while expanding its influence. New inspirations added to their sound, complementing the traditional foundation of the band. The enhanced sound has been catching the ears of listeners & concert goers all over again.

Heather Pierson Trio Concert at Medallion Opera House

Honest. Heartfelt. Soulful — The Heather Pierson Acoustic Trio

At first glance, Heather Pierson appears to be the girl next door – youthful, friendly, a little bit shy. At the seat of a piano or brandishing an acoustic guitar, however, she transforms into a world-class performer, baring her soul in a manner that leaves her listeners breathless and
aching for more.

Heather Pierson is an award-winning pianist, multi-genre singer/songwriter, multiinstrumentalist,arranger, bandleader, and performer. From New Orleans-style jazz and blues to rousing Americana and poignant folk narratives, Heather’s memorable, intimate, and
cathartic live performances, both solo and with her acoustic trio (Davy Sturtevant on strings/cornet and Shawn Nadeau on bass), feature her virtuosity on piano, her bell-tone vocals, and her commanding yet playful stage presence while wielding a tenor banjo, melodica, ukulele, or acoustic guitar. Her music moves seamlessly and effortlessly from one style to the
next, and a growing catalog of wildly divergent CD releases reflects her boundless creativity.

In their able hands, these three veteran musicians have catapulted Heather’s live performances of her deep well of Americana originals – folk, jazz, blues – with intricate instrumental arrangements and stirring three-part vocal harmonies. The trio’s debut EP, Still She Will Fly, was released in May 2015. Its title track was the #2 single on the Folk radio charts for the year in 2015, and three other songs were also in the Top 100 singles on Folk radio in 2015. The trio’s full-length debut, Singin’, releases on June 30, 2017, the tenth release on Heather’s own record label, Vessel Recordings.

Throughout her colorful career, her eclectic skill set continues to propel her onto concert hall stages and into barrooms, coffeehouses, resort hotels, living rooms, and churches. Her nearly non-stop performance schedule (with over 200 shows a year) speaks of her tireless work ethic
and endless devotion to her crafts. Defying genre and classification and yet fully embracing all musical styles, Heather is an artist who speaks the language of music in as many dialects as her abilities will allow. Her life’s work, she says, is to share her love of music and of life with others – one song, one heart, one mind at a time.

Music as Meditation at Medallion Opera House

Ellen Schwindt, a composer and pianist, will share Music as Meditation, during this special event,  the inaugural concert for the Kohler and Campbell Baby Grand Piano which is new to the Medallion Opera House.

Ellen began Music as Meditation as a way for her to share her newest music with listeners and to share a meditative spirit with attendees. The idea behind these concerts is to present music with its connection to human hearts and mind. Musical selections are presented in groups that flow into another, setting the stage for contemplation. Ellen intersperses familiar piano literature with many contemporary pieces and with her own improvisation. She frequently plays violin and viola as well. Come with open ears and a listening heart. You will not be disappointed.

For the July 9 concert, Ellen has programmed part of a Haydn Sonata, a Romance by Germaine Tailleferre, and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. She will share themes from Music for a Resonant Space, the double concerto for violin, piano, and strings—a piece she is planning to premiere later this summer. The July 9th concert is free of admission. Donations to support the creation of more music by Ellen will be gratefully accepted at the door.

The concert is being arranged and promoted by Music in the Great North Woods, a non-profit organization which helped in the procuring of the Kohler and Campbell piano.

Medallion Opera House — Bill & Jean Scolere Art Reception

All are welcome at the free Artist Reception for local artists Bill and Jean Scolere. The exhibition opened May 20th and will continue until July 5th.

Bill and Jean Scolere are longtime residents of Gorham and active members of the art community since 1976. Their art works have graced the exhibition spaces of a number of North Country venues.

Bill and Jean met as art majors in college and have over the years pursued their interests in the arts. Bill has established himself as a print-maker and Jean has studied water color painting.

The exhibition consists of works that reflect common themes with strong differences…color plays against black and white. Fine details are juxtaposed to broad strokes with subtle variations. The choice of works fill the Medallion Opera House Gallery with a studied eye toward exhibition presentation and style. Both artists have displayed high quality standards in the artistic expression and presentation.

The artistic themes in the show run the gamut from the beautiful to the mysterious to the puzzling. Animals, objects, landscapes, architecture, flowers, and figures offer subjects to be contemplated. Visual poetry abounds!

The reception provides the viewer with an opportunity to discuss the works in the show with the artists. Techniques, styles, subject matter, and inspiration may be contemplated.

Light refreshments will be served.

Medallion Opera House Presents: Beatles for Sale

BEATLES FOR SALE is a touring, New England-based Beatles tribute band from Massachusetts that is committed to recreating the sounds of the Beatles live in concert. They are past recipients of the Best Tribute Band in New England award by Limelight Magazine.

This band delivers a fun and energetic performance complete with original instrumentation and vocal harmonies that are as accurate as possible to the original Beatles recordings. There are no offstage performers or pre-recorded tracks – everything is performed completely live.
