Black Bear Behavior
Ben Kilham’s firsthand experience raising cubs and observing black bears, illustrated with photos Ben has taken of bears doing what he says they are doing.

In celebration of summer song, Poet, Balladeer, and former Portsmouth Poet Laureate, John Perrault will present a program of traditional and original Ballads along with New England story songs. Drawing from a repertoire that ranges from “Bonnie Barbara Allen,” to the Maine woods song, “Canada-I-O,” to “St. James Infirmary,” John follows the evolution of the traditional ballad from the mountains and moors of the British Isles to the Southern Mountains and Northern border of North America. John will also sing selections from Rock and Root, now available from CD Baby: www.cdbaby.com/cd/johnperrault.

The Flea Markets, held every other weekend throughout the summer, are where you’ll find antiques, collectibles, fine crafts and much more, including refreshments. Free admission. Begins at 10 a.m.

Earth Heroes
A Peregrine Falcon and live animal friends from the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness come to visit, in a program led by expert naturalists. The live animal programs are always a hit; come early and bring the kids!

New Hampshire Cemeteries and Gravestones
Rubbings, photographs and slides illustrate the rich variety of gravestones to be found in one’s own neighborhoods, but they also tell long-forgotten stories of such historical events as the Great Awakening, the Throat Distemper epidemic, and the American Revolution. Find out more about these deeply personal works of art and the craftsmen who carved them with Glenn Knoblock, and learn how to read the stone “pages” that give insight into the vast genealogical book of New Hampshire. Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn: The Connected Farm Buildings of New England
Through architecture unique to northern New England, this illustrated talk focuses on several case studies that show how farmers converted typical separate house and barns into connected farmsteads. Thomas Hubka’s research demonstrates that average farmers were, in fact, motivated by competition with farmers in other regions of America, who had better soils and growing seasons and fewer rocks to clear. The connected farmstead organization, housing equal parts mixed-farming and home-industry, was one of the collective responses to the competitive threat. New Hampshire Humanities Council program, free and open to the public.

In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Mount Washington Cog Railway in 2019, the Mount Washington Cog Railway is partnering with premier New Hampshire organizations to celebrate New Hampshire’s innovation and finest handmade craft and products by New Hampshire artisans at the juried Annual Handcrafted in NH Fest. Participating in this event are members of the League of NH Craftsmen, New Hampshire Made, and WREN (the Women’s Rural Entrepreneurial Network). Artisans will showcase specialty food and skin care products, jewelry, glass, wood products, pottery and more.
This free weekend event takes place at the Base Station of the Mount Washington Cog Railway (located only 6 miles from Bretton Woods, NH) .
