FAMILY ADVENTURE: LODGE TO HUT

This program offers a perfect introduction to hut hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After orientation activities and a night’s sleep at Highland Lodge in Crawford Notch, we’ll begin our adventure with a moderate hike in Crawford Notch. During the afternoon we’ll learn and hone our map reading and compass skills, and practice on our orienteering course. On day three we’ll make our way to Lonesome Lake Hut, one of the most accessible huts for families and kids. Depending on arrival times at the hut we’ll explore the area, including Lonesome Lake right at the hut, or possible hikes out Kinsman Pond or nearby summits.

LODGE TO HUT: PRESIDENTIAL TRAVERSE

Join AMC on this hut-to-hut adventure as we explore the Presidential Range from North to South. Beginning with dinner and a comfortable night’s lodging at AMC’s Highland Center; we gear up for our backcountry adventure. We embark on our hike up the Airline Trail to Madison Spring Hut. The next day we traverse the rocky northern Presidential Range to Lakes of the Clouds Hut giving us ample opportunity to explore the ridge in full summer glory. From Lakes of the Clouds Hut, we continue along the southern Presidential Range to Mizpah Spring Hut. We end our hike by descending the historic Crawford Path to the Highland Center.

WOMEN’S ADVENTURE: HIKE AND PADDLE

Participants will enjoy one day focused on hiking in beautiful Crawford Notch, with skills such as hiking safety above treeline, use of map & compass, Leave No TraceĀ©, and basic first aid skills. Participants will spend the second day learning the basics of flatwater paddling in a canoe, on scenic Moore Reservoir, on the Connecticut River.

LODGE TO HUT: MOUNT WASHINGTON HIKE AND OVERNIGHT AT LAKES OF THE CLOUDS

Join an AMC Outdoor Guide on an attempt to summit New England’s highest peak, Mount Washington. At 6,288′ the “rock pile” should be on everyone’s bucket list. Often underestimated due to its low elevation for a summit above treeline, and it’s relatively short mileage. This challenging hike may be difficult for some to accomplish in one day, so we will take advantage of Lakes of the Clouds Hut and spend the night, hiking back down the next day.

AMC Highland Center Presents: Zen on the Trail

Author Christopher Ives will give a reading from his book Zen on the Trail.

Zen on the Trail opens a window on hiking as a form of pilgrimage, as a spiritual practice that can deepen one’s connection to the natural world. While introducing readers to Buddhist contemplative practices on the trail and an array of pilgrimage traditions, Zen on the Trail highlights lessons that can be brought home from the woods.
