AMC Presents: Wildlife of the White Mountains

Naturalist Dave Govatski will lead this program that will look at several charismatic mammals of the White Mountain region, including American marten, fisher, snowshoe hare, beaver, black bear and moose. We will discuss what these animals eat, how they survive our long winters and places where you might see them. We will also look at several bird species found in the mountains, including spruce grouse, gray jays, boreal chickadees, and black-backed woodpeckers.

AMC Presents: Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing & Astronomy Lecture

Dr. Douglas Arion, Director of the Carthage Institute of Astronomy, will give a presentation on the intricate and fascinating connections between life on Earth and the history and phenomena of the Universe around us. Learn about the amazing sequence of events that led to the formation of the solar system and the Earth, and how we have come to understand what we are and why we are here. Following the presentation, weather permitting, there will be observing through telescopes. The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks on this day, and you’ll have a chance to see up to 80 meteors per hour.

AMC Presents: Music of the White Mountains

Ben Cosgrove is a traveling composer-performer whose “electrifying and exhilarating” instrumental music is inspired by places and landscapes around North America. In 2015-16, Ben served as the Artist-In-Residence for the White Mountain National Forest, and he has also held residencies and fellowships at other national parks and arts centers. His performances have been described as “stunning” (RedLine Roots) and as “compelling and beautiful” (The Harvard Crimson).

AMC Presents: Youth Ensemble of New England

The Youth Ensemble of New England is a youth orchestra comprised of about 30 young people ages 10 to 20 and is based at Thayer Conservatory in Lancaster, Massachusetts.

The repertoire of the orchestra includes works of the great masters such as Bach, Mendelssohn, Purcell, and Dvorak, as well as lighter American and Pops-type music. The orchestra hopes to share their love of great music with all types of audiences.

AMC Presents: Ecology of Alpine Snowbank Communities

Guest speaker and botanist Kevin Berend will present a program on the Ecology of Alpine Snowbank Communities. Alpine snowbank communities are rare, diverse ecosystems found in the Northeast only in sheltered sites above treeline, where snow insulates and shelters plants from wind and late-season frosts. These areas are highly sensitive to climate change, and may serve as indicators of regional changes in precipitation patterns and temperatures.

Stories in Wood: White Mountain Art Exhibition

Artist Craig Altobello uses beautiful wood marquetry to capture the scenes of adventure and nature of the White Mountains. His colorful wood panels are created primarily from North American wood and include landscapes, birds, alpine flowers, and mammals native to the Northern Forest, as well as huts, rock cairns and dramatic skies. He is a juried member of the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and the Sharon Arts Center in Peterborough, NH

The exhibit will be on display in the Mt. Willard Dining Room of the AMC Highland Center from June 23 – August 28. An opening reception is set for Friday, June 23, from 5 to 7 p.m., with dinner available for purchase that evening.

The exhibit is free and open to the public when the space is not otherwise in use.
