Fun on Snow at the 2013 Colebrook Winter Carnival

An all-day Snow Bocce Tournament, a Cardboard Box Derby, Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides, and a Canoe Race on snow are among the exciting activities planned for the 2013 Colebrook Winter Carnival on Saturday, February 9, at the Colebrook Country Club.

An annual event for well over 40 years, the Colebrook Winter Carnival is expected to draw hundreds of people to compete in the events, cheer on the competitors, and enjoy meeting old friends and making new ones during the day of winter fun.

Fuel up for the morning’s activities at the pancake breakfast from 7-10 a.m. The kids’ Cardboard Box Derby gets underway at 9 a.m. Lots of imagination goes into the youngsters’ creations. Past events have featured a tank with a turret, a rocket ship, a boat, and a Scooby Doo van. Prizes will be awarded in different classes, including Best Decorated and Best Wipe Out. Who knows what the kids will dream up this year!

A highlight of the Winter Carnival is the 9th Annual Snow Bocce Tournament, which begins at 9:30 a.m. and runs throughout the day. Teams from Kiwanis Clubs around the region will be joined by Key Club teams, and a group of dedicated softball players. While skill is involved, much of the action is determined by the weather and how well the bocce courts stay dry and in good condition.

Other activities on the schedule include Fun for Kids on the Otter Slide, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides, beginning at 11 a.m.; Dogsled Rides from noon to 3 p.m., the Adult Cardboard Box Race & Snow Regatta at 2 p.m.; and a Canoe Race at 3 p.m. Check out the Cribbage Tournament beginning at 1 p.m. inside the Colebrook Country Club. Numerous other activities will round out the Winter Carnival, including games for kids.

Hot food and drinks will be available throughout the day, along with a large-screen TV raffle.

Snowmobilers can ride in to the event. Folks who are participating in the Firefighters Snowmobile Ride-In and Poker Run that begins at 8 a.m. at the Colebrook Fire Department are welcome to swing by the Country Club, take a break, and enjoy the Winter Carnival.

First organized by the Colebrook Jaycees, the event is now sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Colebrook. For more information, check out their website at http://www.colebrook-kiwanis.org.
